As the people of God at Martha Bowman UMC, we believe:

  • In one God, creator and sustainer of all things, revealed in perfect unity as three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 1 Timothy 2:3-6; Romans 8:9-16
  • The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are God's inspired revelation of truth, and the final authority in all matters of faith and life. 2 Timothy 3:14-17
  • Jesus Christ alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. His death on the cross for the sins of all humankind provides the only ground for forgiveness and salvation. Faith in him is the path to eternal life. John 14:6; Philippians 2:5-11; Colossians 1:15-20
  • The Holy Spirit is the agent of new birth, makes the presence of Jesus real in believers, comforts, guides, and empowers believers to be fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. John 14:16-17, 26
  • The Church universal encompasses faithful followers of Jesus in all places through the ages. The church is the Body of Christ in which every part is necessary and none can survive and thrive apart from the rest. Furthermore, we stand in unity with all Christian denominations as reaching the world together. Colossians 1:18, 24-27; Ephesians 4:6
  • Communion is open to all Christian believers. We invite people not to a Methodist Table or a Martha Bowman Table but to the Lord's Table. Children are also welcome at the Lord's Table.
  • In the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit. The fruit are to thrive in all believers while the gifts are apportioned to each as the Spirit decides. The full range of gifts are given for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ. Galatians 5:22-23
  • Baptism is commanded as a seal of belief in obedience to Jesus' direction. God is the primary mover in baptism, claiming and embracing people as his own. Therefore, both adults and children are welcome at the baptismal waters. We baptize by immersion, pouring, or sprinkling. Acts 16:29-33
  • In the ministry of all believers. While the Church calls certain persons to ordained ministry to oversee the work of the church, we believe every believer is called to full ministry, extending the grace of God into every place. Ephesians 4:11-13
  • God not only forgives the sins of believers but renews our nature by giving us the mind and heart and hands of Jesus Christ. This gift of sanctification comes by faith, not by works, and perfects love in our hearts through God's grace. Ephesians 4:14-16

John Wesley's three General Rules:
