OUR MISSION

It is our desire that each person who becomes a part of the Martha Bowman family will experience a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, through an authentic, caring, Christian Community. Our mission is to save the lost, disciple the saved, and alleviate suffering. Our heart is to be a church that is Spirit Led, Lay Driven.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  • We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.

  • We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united. He is the eternal Word made flesh, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. As ministering Servant he lived, suffered and died on the cross. He was buried, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven to be with the Father, from whence he shall return. He is eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us, and by him all men will be judged.

  • We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from and is one in being with the Father and the Son. He convinces the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He leads men through faithful response to the gospel into the fellowship of the Church. He comforts, sustains and empowers the faithful and guides them into all truth.

  • We believe the Holy Bible, Old and New Testaments, reveals the Word of God so far as it is necessary for our salvation. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice. Whatever is not revealed in or established by the Holy Scriptures is not to be made an article of faith nor is it to be taught as essential to salvation.

  • We believe man is fallen from righteousness and, apart from the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, is destitute of holiness and inclined to evil. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. In his own strength, without divine grace, man cannot do good works pleasing and acceptable to God. We believe, however, man influenced and empowered by the Holy Spirit is responsible in freedom to exercise his will for good.

  • We believe God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself. The offering Christ freely made on the cross is the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, redeeming man from all sin, so that no other satisfaction is required.

We believe we are never accounted righteous before God through our works or merit, but that penitent sinners are justified or accounted righteous before God only by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe regeneration is the renewal of man in righteousness through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, whereby we are made partakers of the divine nature and experience newness of life. By this new birth the believer becomes reconciled to God and is enabled to serve him with the will and the affections.

We believe, although we have experienced regeneration, it is possible to depart from grace and fall into sin; and we may even then, by the grace of God, be renewed in righteousness.

  • We believe that the church is the body of Christ, an extension of Christ's life and ministry in the world today.

We believe that the mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

We believe that the church is "the communion of saints," a community made up of all past, present, and future disciples of Christ.

We believe that the church is called to worship God and to support those who participate in its life as they grow in faith.

  • We believe the Sacraments, ordained by Christ, are symbols and pledges of the Christian's profession and of God's love toward us. They are means of grace by which God works invisibly in us, quickening, strengthening and confirming our faith in him. Two Sacraments are ordained by Christ our Lord, namely Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

We believe Baptism signifies entrance into the household of faith, and is a symbol of repentance and inner cleansing from sin, a representation of the new birth in Christ Jesus and a mark of Christian discipleship.

We believe children are under the atonement of Christ and as heirs of the Kingdom of God are acceptable subjects for Christian Baptism. Children of believing parents through Baptism become the special responsibility of the Church. They should be nurtured and led to personal acceptance of Christ, and by profession of faith confirm their Baptism.

We believe the Lord's Supper is a representation of our redemption, a memorial of the sufferings and death of Christ, and a token of love and union which Christians have with Christ and with one another. Those who rightly, worthily and in faith eat the broken bread and drink the blessed cup partake of the body and blood of Christ in a spiritual manner until he comes.

New Here?

We know visiting a church for the first time can be intimidating, and we want to make your first visit to Martha Bowman Church a wonderful experience! When you enter the church, look for the Guest Services Desk or a friendly Guest Services volunteer.  We have a gift for you and would love to help you find your way around the church and answer any questions you might have.

  • On Sunday mornings we are currently offering three in-person worship services along with online worship. If you love hymns, a choir and the liturgy of the Church, the Traditional Service might be the place for you at 8:30 AM or 11:00 AM in the Historic Sanctuary. If you are looking for a more informal style of worship, the Contemporary Service might be the right fit for you at 11:00 AM in The Commons. We also offer Sunday School for all ages at 9:45 AM.

  • How you dress is completely up to you! Most people wear "business casual" attire, but we also have a solid dose of jeans as well as ties and dresses.

  • Our church is located at 500 Bass Road (at the corner of Bass and Forsyth Roads), and we have three lots available for parking on Sunday mornings. Our main parking lot has two entrances off of Bass Road and we have designated guest and handicap parking spots in this lot. If this lot is full, we have overflow parking off Forsyth Road at the Howard Community Club, and also at our Upper Parking Lot which is the next driveway past the Howard Community Club.

  • We have two primary entrances to the church, and if you park in the main parking lot there are signs to point you towards these entrances.

The Main Entrance puts you at a good central point on our campus. From there you may turn left to go to our Historic Sanctuary, or you may walk upstairs to The Commons, which is our Contemporary Worship Center. Our Preschool and iKids registration desk is located in the Family Connection Lobby to your right.

If you park in the back, or in one of the two overflow lots, you will want to enter through the Family Entrance, which is beside the playground. From this entrance you will immediately see the Preschool and iKids registration desk.

If you aren’t quite sure where to go, just look for one of our friendly guest service volunteers who will be more than happy to help you!

  • Becoming a member of Martha Bowman UMC begins with a desire to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ as a member of this local congregation. For United Methodists, being baptized and committing to active participation in a church community are the first steps to becoming a member.

Baptism marks the beginning of our lifelong journey as disciples of Jesus Christ. In baptism, we are initiated into the Christian church and incorporated into the community of God's people, the body of Christ. Those who have never been baptized will receive the sacrament of baptism before becoming members. Those previously baptized will reaffirm the Baptismal Covenant as part of their membership vows. In those vows, we promise to faithfully live out the call to serve Christ through our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.

Let us know if you would like to talk with one of our pastors about what it means to be a member of Martha Bowman. LEARN MORE
